Returning Favorites For 2012!
  Annuals:

Borage, also known as Starflower, is an annual herb originating from Syria. It grows to a height of 2 to 3 feet. Most often the flowers are Blue, though we also grow White Borage for variety. In milder climates, borage will bloom throughout the year and can be a prolific spreader. Did you know borage can be used for culinary purposes?  It's often used as a fresh vegetable or a dried herb. As a fresh vegetable it has a cucumber like taste. The flowers have a slightly sweet, honey-like flavor and are often used on desserts.

We grow a variety of Nigella called Love-in-a-mist. This variety, which belongs to the Buttercup family, grows to 15 - 30 inches. It has lovely flowers which are followed by an attractive seed pod. The seed pod can be stored, self-sown or used as a beautiful accent in dried floral arrangements. If left to self-sow, this plant will grow back in the same spot the following spring.

Safflowers, and this Zanzibar strain in particular, have highly colored yellow-red flowers that make an inexpensive substitute for saffron. Lovely to look at as well, this plant prefers sun to part shade and dryish soils.  Plant outside after last frost in the spring.  You can harvest the flowers once they open, or let mature to produce the oil-rich seed to press for Safflower oil.

Mexican Mint Marigold is often a gardener's favorite. This tender perennial is easy to care for, compact and very useful in the kitchen! You can use the flowers to enhance salads and other dishes as well as dry them to make teas. It is also said to attract beneficials, helping to reduce pest damage to the garden. Grows best in well drained soil and full sun.

Ornamental Peppers are truly a crowd pleaser. These gorgeous plants are often called Christmas Peppers and belong to the capsicum annuum family. They can be planted outside or grow wonderfully in containers. The peppers are edible as long as you know the grower does not use pesticides that could be harmful (We Don't!). Our offerings this year include Numex Twilight, Prairie Fire, Sangria and Black Pearl.
